October 2024 – County Councillor Reports

Below are the monthly reports from your County Councillors for the Radyr & Morganstown Ward.

Cllr Calum Davies – October report

Received by the Web Team on 1 November 2024

Buses

It has been alarming to hear more stories from residents about negative experiences with local buses in recent weeks. I encourage residents to send these into me as I can then demonstrate to bus operators how people in the ward are not being delivered a sufficiently reliable or frequent service. It is not acceptable that so many people in Radyr & Morganstown do not have the service it deserves.

Recycling collection

I have had an increase in reports of segregated recycling not being collected as usual in the ward. If this happens to you, please do not hesitate to get in touch so I can get to the bottom of the issue.

Estates on Llantrisant Road

Alongside other councillors, we showed Council officers the lack of engagement opportunities there are for local children on estates that fall outside Radyr & Morganstown that may be behind anti-social behaviour in our ward. We are hoping this could lead to Youth Services providing a pop-up presence on these estate so we may give young people something else to do in the community.

Parking by Radyr Train Station

I have reports of a significant increase in dangerous parking between the bridge leading to the Sidings and the train station car park. Parking here creates blind spots in an area where there has already been a car accident in recent months, so I politely urge that people consider where they leave their car in this area with this in mind.

Eco-fair

Radyr Methodist Church is hosting another of its Eco-Charities Fair between 10am-12pm on Saturday 16th November. I have been in the past myself and encourage others to attend and see what goodies there are to take home.

Written Questions

Ahead of every Council meeting, I have the chance to table five written questions to the Cabinet. I will aim to use up my allocation each and every month to find out information useful to myself as a representative of Radyr & Morganstown but also in my other roles on the Council, including the Conservatives’ education spokesperson. This month I asked:

  • Which schools have budget deficits, how much are those deficits, and how much are in the school’s reserves?
  • Will the Cabinet Member provide an updated timeline for the adoption of the replacement LDP?
  • Will the Cabinet Member guarantee that the Council’s finances will not be worse off given it is planning to demolish the Red Dragon Centre, which it acquired for £63m only a few years ago? How will the Council make back the money spent on the Centre?
  • What steps will Cardiff Council be taking in light of the findings of the Cass Review?
  • How many roles are there in the planning department, both filled and unfilled (vacancies)?

Answers can be found here on the written questions section of the Council meeting agenda.

Cllr Helen Lloyd Jones – DATE Report

Received by the Web Team on 8 November 2024

Overview

Father Christmas will be coming to Radyr and Morganstown Dec 13th and he’ll start from Morganstown Village Hall this year. The Lighting of the Christmas trees will be on December 6th. Look out for details in the Radyr Chain

The Radyr Chain is having a revival thanks to several people in the ward. Huge thanks to all of them.

In extraordinary and sad circumstances, I will be made Lord Mayor of Cardiff at the end of November. I was the Deputy and sadly the Lord Mayor has died. The installation date is November 28th at County Hall at 4:30pm

Many of you know that I have been attending Llandaff Cathedral ever since I came to Radyr, mainly because one of the priests there had been the curate where I had been living.

I am truly touched that the Dean has allowed us to join in the Evensong on December 15th at the Cathedral (time either 3pm or 4pm to be confirmed). It is a low-key service. The post of Lord Mayor will be blessed. I would be delighted to see you there.

It is a huge honour to represent all of Cardiff.

Plasdŵr

Drover’s Way

Still no lights. Been told we are waiting for the contractor to install them. Will ask again

The land has been restored and re-seeded. Been told it will take a while to settle. We will keep an eye on it.

Odour at Clos Parc Radur

Going to drop reporting this as have had no complaints since June and know that there have been alterations made at the Barratt estate to improve things.

Lon Pererinion

This will be dropped in the next report as last time I looked the street was almost finished. Please tell me if there are still any problems.

St Philbert St

Have asked for information on the promised landscaping but have had no reply.

Morganstown

Radyr Rangers (RR) SECOND PRIORITY

No news from the club during October re their wish list, a club house and a properly drained football pitch. They worked hard to enable Radyr Comp to pull down a grant from the FAW’s scheme. The all-weather pitch at Radyr Comp is ready and will be used for the first time Nov 11th

Morganstown Village Hall

The Village Hall would love to hear from anyone in the community who would be interested in helping the Hall, from just volunteering occasionally to being a trustee.  Know that discussion is going on re adding the booking system to the one used by the Community Council If you’d like to help Contact morganstownvillagehall@gmail.com

Radyr and Morganstown

Buses FIRST PRIORITY

Yes, it is the first priority. The problem is the subsidy it needs to keep going. Hoping that we will be able to draw down some funds this year. Have been looking for possible funding pots.

Litter Picking

There is an active group of litter pickers. Please contact peter.fortuneuk@gmail.com for details. The more the merrier.

Radyr Woods Wardens

The wardens meet regularly and are always pleased to have new volunteers. Contact clerk@radyr.wales

Facebook

I have a Facebook page Cllr Helen Lloyd Jones Do please follow me.

Replacement Local Development Plan

The original timeline is behind schedule, we are now likely to be in the next stage in January.

Youth Work THIRD PRIORITY

Cardiff Youth Services CYS have set up an informal group at Radyr Hub. Mondays and Thursdays.

Flooding under the M4 bridge

No further news Flooding returned. Really want the drains checked in the adjacent field. Will keep asking

Green Waste Collections

Like you, we are not having a green waste collection. Have been asking for at least one more collection in November and one in December. Will keep asking. If it is affecting you negatively, please let me know.

Community Engagement Officer

Would very much like to see a Community Engagement Officer working with our new residents to help them integrate with the community. There is some progress on this. We had a site visit with an officer who is in charge of youth services and he has promised he will set something up for our youngsters. It’s a first step.

Police Incidents

When we ask for a regular police patrol, we get told there aren’t enough incidents to justify their presence. Know that phoning 101 can take a very long time to get an answer. It’s so easy to give up trying to contact the police. So please use the email address swp101@south-wales.police.uk and flag up any incident if you are unfortunate enough to witness one.

Halloween

This turned into a Diwali happening which was the same evening. We did try to get things in place for pumpkins and Halloween but things didn’t go to plan. It happens

The good news was that the Diwali (The Hindus New Year) display was beautiful. There was a chance to paint your own Rangoli. Next year we hope to celebrate Diwali again and hopefully people will drop round to wish everyone a Happy Diwali. Thanks to Radhika Kadaba for organising the display

Goldies

Goldies is every first Friday of the month in the New School Rooms by Christchurch. It’s fun to sing along to the karaoke. Do pop along and enjoy. Next one on Friday 6th December.

Remembrance Sunday

This year Adam O’Donavan is organizing the event. Ian Ogden is stepping down after nine years of making it happen. Thanks Ian, your contribution has been so appreciated and we hope you will join us for many years to come. Adam has been grateful of all the help and advice you have given him.  Thank you too, Adam for being willing to take over. We are so pleased.

Next Councillor’s surgery

30 November 10:30 am to 11:30 am at Cicchetti’s. Just come along if you want to talk to me. If you want to talk to me about a private and confidential matter, just let me know and we’ll make sure you can.
