Elections
It’s a great honour and a privilege to be chosen as Cardiff’s Deputy Lord Mayor in May. I was already to write up May’s report when the General Election was called. Once an election is called, we go into a pre-election period. During that time, there are rules on what some people are allowed to say and it seemed wiser to wait.
Our new MP is Alex Barros-Curtis. He was born and brought up in North Wales. He went to Prestatyn High School and then studied law at the London School of Economics. He always wanted to serve in Wales. I’d like to wish him well and I hope he will represent our ward well and serve our country well too.
It was a real shock to us when Kevin Brennan announced he was not going to stand this time. I have only had the privilege of working with Kevin since I became a Councillor. I have found him a hardworking, caring and a very conscientious MP and I would like to thank him for the years of service he gave to our constituency of Cardiff West. I wish him well too, he is a talented musician and who knows, he may be back in Radyr at the Festival with a band.
Grants
The big news is that the Football Association of Wales under the Cymru Football Foundation have offered a grant to Radyr Comprehensive which will make it possible for the school to have an all-weather football pitch available for community use outside of school hours. Huge congratulations to the school and thanks especially to the Estates Manager Mrs Gail Coombs who worked tirelessly on the application process and to Radyr Rangers and in particular, Wyn Williams for the help and support he gave the school. We also should thank the Officer who is in charge of Sports and Leisure Development who has been a fantastic help.
Radyr
Drover’s Way
Cardiff Council has been in touch with Horizon to do the reinstating work needed on the disturbed ground by the new play area. We are still trying to get lights for the path. Looking hopeful at the moment.
Station Road
Thanks to Radyr and Morganstown Community Council we have hanging baskets in Station Road. Do take a moment to look at the brackets holding the baskets. They feature different animals from the Taff Trail. The broken fascia on the old Spar shop has been replaced.
Windsor Gardens
Thanks again to Radyr and Morganstown Community Centre a plaque to remember Aryan Ghoniya, the Year 8 pupil who drowned in the Taff two years ago was made. The artwork was drawn by his sister and we feel Aryan would be pleased to see the love that had gone in to making his plaque special.
We had a simple ceremony with his family and his school friends to unveil his plaque on the bench nearest the Tribute Tree.
Plasdŵr
Odour at Clos Parc Radur
We have been told that changes have been made at the source of the odour problem. Keeping my fingers firmly crossed, no one has reported any odours in the last four weeks.
Lon Pererinion
This is becoming a real concern. It is totally unacceptable that the road is still not made up. I will continue to ask Redrow.
Traffic lights junction Llantrisant Road and Heol Isaf
The no-mow May approach doesn’t work well for this traffic junction as once the grass reaches a certain height, people using the slip road can’t see if there is traffic coming to their right. Did flag the problem up and the grass has been cut back for us.
Exit St John Avenue by Clos y Fwyalchen Wen
This has become overgrown and is causing problems. Have reported it.
Morganstown
Radyr Rangers (RR) SECOND PRIORITY
The bid to help them drain the full-sized pitch on the Mound wasn’t successful but they will be applying again.
Morganstown Village Hall
The village hall does not belong to Cardiff Council or Radyr and Morganstown Community Council. It belongs to a trust and for many years, there has been a dedicated group of trustees who have ensure the village hall is available to everyone.
Huge thanks to Derek Bateman, Maggie Roberts and Carol Clarke for all the hard work they have put in and are still putting in, to keeping the hall going.
They have just sorted out a drainage problem. They are looking at ways of sorting other maintenance bits and pieces and they have put in for a Community Engagement grant which if successful would help them bring the Mother and Toddler space back into use and the stairs back into use. Here’s hoping the effort they are making gets good results.
They would love to hear from anyone in the community who would be interested in helping the Hall, from just volunteering occasionally to being a trustee. Contact morganstownvillagehall@gmail.com

Buses FIRST PRIORITY
This is the most important problem we have. Still trying to find solutions.

Replacement Local Development Plan
We won’t know whether our concerns have been allayed until later on this year.
Youth Work THIRD PRIORITY
Cardiff Youth Services CYS are coming into the ward and interacting with our youngsters. There are sessions in Radyr Library on Monday and Thursday evening. They are there on Mondays 6pm -9pm and Thursdays 3:15 pm -7pm. There are a range of activities available for the youngsters, including just chatting to their friends, but I noticed some youngsters are taking advantage of a quiet space to do their homework. Others were playing on virtual reality games. Pleasing to see the numbers attending have started to grow.
Flooding under the M4 bridge
Know the drainage is going to be checked. Hoping it will sort our flooding problems out. Still waiting for weather which will allow for an exploration of the area.
Councillor’s Surgery
