On Friday evening (7 July 2023) the Festival Committee presented a cheque for £7,500 to the British Heart Foundation for monies raised during the May Festival. More money has already been raised by the RMA and other groups across the community and BHF will remain the RMA’s charity for the rest of 2023 which will cover all of the community Christmas events.

The cheque was presented to Carys from BHF Wales during a “thank you” evening and BBQ at the Old Church Rooms where the volunteers who make the events across the Festival Fortnight happen.

The sun was blazing for the first eco fair organised by Radyr Methodist Church on Saturday 3 June 2023. The stream of people has been ongoing all morning. Methodists, neighbours, passers-by of all ages have stopped to take a look, purchase a couple of items, take a plant or have a chat about the fair, the environment and ask for tips. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming. “This green fair, this eco fair, is an opportunity to share and provide a marketplace for organisations that are delivering on issues regarding the environment,” says Cath Taylor, the coordinator of the eco fair.

Outside are the plant swap and local beekeepers stands; inside, the clothes swap, a local ethical shop, No Waste Living, selling products good for the planet and a chance to refill your bottles  and a stand for litter pickers to name but a few. The aim is to “help keep our local environment and our local community clean and healthy, not just for our kids but for the wildlife that is affected,” adds Cath.

When the Rev’d Judith Holliman arrived in Radyr four years ago, she was delighted to meet so many like-minded people to talk and to reflect on the environment. “We wondered, what we can do to remind people of how easy it is to recycle. It’s grown from that and the church happily embraced it,” says Judith.

Starting with refillable bottles, they are offering a plant swap and a clothes swap at the fair. The idea is to bring plants and clothes ahead of the fair, so they are sorted out. On the day, people can come and pick what they want. Donations are welcome but not mandatory. “We will take the remaining clothes to a charity down the road. In this system, everybody benefits and nothing goes into the landfill,” rejoices Judith.

The children were an important part of the fair. They had a room where they could play and there were activities prepared by the team: there was a critter box with small insects from the garden, making hedgehogs out of  fir cones and birdfeeders. “We gave information about how long they live and what they do. It’s about taking care of God’s creation,” adds Angela, a local preacher who participated in creating the children’s activities.

Only one of the dozen or so children who came along was known to the team. The stream of young people being slow but steady, the volunteers had time to dedicate to the children, guiding them in the activities and answering their questions. Ahead of the fair, children and the team had prepared a puppet display for the entrance to the church. The puppet show was a garden with bees, butterflies and characters who look at them. “It is to show everyone that gardens are beautiful and that we need to look after the creation that God’s given us,” concludes Angela.

Radyr & Morganstown Community Council have three vacancies covering the Wards of Radyr North and Morganstown.

Expressions of interest are being sought from members of the public who are interested in representing their community on the Community Council.

Radyr Methodist Church are hosting a Green / Eco fair and free Plant swap* Saturday June 3^rd 9am – 1pm

Radyr Methodist church has been working hard to improve our care for the natural world and environment with use of Fair trade and eco-friendly products, reusing, recycling and recent improvements in our heating, lighting and insulation of our premises. We have achieved an A Rocha Eco-church Bronze Award, but there is so much more we can learn and do as a church, as individuals and as part of our growing community.

So we are delighted to be hosting local producers Elsinore bees and Garth View Organics, No Waste living No Waste Living – Intentional Living to Create Less waste and our local Litter Pickers, along with our own Beautiful Abodes for bats and birds, Seaglass jewellery, Nearly new clothes, and a new Puppets display and Children’s activities.

We hope individuals, families and local organisations will join us as we learn to live more sustainably and care for our beautiful world and the creatures and people we share it with.

*if you don’t have plants to bring, please come and take a plant or two to help the bees butterflies and insects in your garden or window box.

We’ll also be celebrating with an Environment Sunday Service Sunday June 4^th 10.30am – all welcome.

The latest consultation from Cardiff Council has been launched. This one takes the topic of Local Flood Risk Management.

We want to hear your views on how we can best manage flood risk in your area.

The ‘Local Flood Risk Management strategy consultation’ is now open and your feedback will help us decide how flood risk is managed over the next 6 years.

With your help, we can ensure that our work is in line with national policies and meets local needs.

As part of this consultation, we are seeking to review and amend the current flood risk strategy under Section 10 of The Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

The UK-Wide Emergency Alerts system is now live and it will be used to warn people when lives are in danger.

The UK government’s new Emergency Alerts system is now live.
The system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone when lives are in danger. On Sunday 23 April 2023 at 3pm, there will be a national test of the Emergency Alerts service.

It will be used to warn you in the event of emergencies, such as severe flooding.

Emergency Alerts are sent to all compatible mobile phones within an area of risk. They don’t track your location, need your phone number, or collect personal data. Only the government and the emergency services will be able to send them. If you don’t have a mobile phone, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.

If you get an Emergency Alert on your phone, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how best to respond. You’ll be able to check an alert is genuine at gov.uk/alerts

If you receive an alert, read the alert carefully and follow the instructions.

Cardiff Council Budget

Cardiff Council estimate that in 2023-24 delivering day-to-day services – including schools and social services, waste collection and parks – will coast an extra £75, because of price increases, inflation and demand pressures.

The Council is seeking to know what you think if its proposals to close the £23m budget gap.

Cardiff Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

According to the consultation website:

Modernising Cardiff’s Intelligent Transport Systems, known as Intelligent Transport Systems, can help you:

• Plan journeys easily across multiple modes by putting information directly into your hands to help optimise your route, avoid disruption, check accessibility options.
• Enjoy a safe and vibrant City centre by restricting access dynamically to traffic in leisure areas and improving your access to dynamic parking availability data.
• Avoid congestion and pollution trouble-spots by shifting traffic away dynamically from these.
• Live in a healthier environment by restricting polluting vehicles access.
• Access richer real time information and improved bus priority systems.​
• Walk and cycle more safely by shifting traffic away from safe and pleasant cycling and walking routes and improving pedestrian and cyclist traffic light priority.

To deliver these benefits and many others, Cardiff Council has developed a Draft Intelligent Transport Systems Strategy which sets out our vision to 2030 and beyond. It will be key in realising the targets set out in the One Planet Cardiff and the Transport White Paper.

Roath Park Dam project

Roath Park Lake is a manmade reservoir, formed by a dam structure to the south and fed by the Nant Fawr. Cardiff Council is legally responsible for maintaining the publicly owned Roath Park Dam, and routine inspections are required under the Reservoirs Act (1975).

The latest inspection of the reservoir found that the dam’s spillway capacity would not be large enough to withstand a theoretical extreme flooding event and statutory works are now required.

Christmas is coming and there is lots to look forward to across Radyr & Morganstown.

The Christmas lights will soon be going up along Station Road and down Heol Isaf. There will also be the usual 3 outdoor Christmas Trees illuminated in

• GrannyPark (Morganstown);
• Lychgate Gardens (Radyr Sidings); and
• Windsor Gardens (Opposite Station Road, Radyr).

Christmas Lights across Radyr and Morganstown

The Christmas Lights across Radyr and Morganstown event will be held on Friday 2 December 2022.

Starting around 18.00 with the singing of carols around the 3 trees,

• 6.00pm Granny Park, Morganstown featuring singers from Gwaelod y Garth Primary School with the tree lit approx. 6.15pm
• 6.15pm in Lychgate Gardens, Radyr Siding with singers from Radyr Comprehensive and the tree lit approx. 6.25
• 6.15pm in Radyr Methodist Church pupils of Radyr Primary and Bryn Deri Primary will sing carols before the tree outside in Windsor Gardens is lit.

Also, from around 6:00pm, we should be ready in Station Road with stalls selling all sorts of goodies – crafts, gifts, jewellery and much more. Our usual burgers, hot dogs and mulled wine will be available at the RMA stalls. Most of the shops will also be open and joining in the fun, including Cicchetti, Slice and The Radyr Tap, so you will be able to do some shopping and even stay for a meal.

Headway Cardiff & South East Wales, will finish their year as the RMA’s chosen charity with a stall and be collecting with buckets during the evening. Please give generously.

At 7.00pm, Darcey Corria, Miss Wales 2022, will officially turn on the lights before announcing the arrival of Santa (who had better not be late) and, providing everyone has been good, he will join his sleigh to talk to the young children.

Do come along and enjoy the festivities. It is a lovely way to start the Christmas Season and entrance is free.

Santa’s tour of Radyr & Morganstown

Santa and his Sleigh have been invited by the Radyr & Morganstown Community Council. The sleigh will tour Radyr & Morganstown on Friday 16 December 2022.

Full route and anticipated timings for Santa’s tour are now available.

To assist with Road Safety please do not attempt to approach Santa when he is travelling in his sleigh but he will be accompanied by some elves collecting for the RMA Charity 22 – Headway Cardiff and South East Wales.

Our Partners at South Wales Police have asked us to promote their Annual Community Safety Survey:

The South Wales Police & Crime Commissioner has launched his annual community survey. The aim of the survey is to seek feedback from the public about:

• what can be improved to make people feel safe wherever they live, work, or spend time in South Wales
• their views and experiences of engaging with the police in their local area
• their views on the options being considered for the policing element of council tax payments (the “precept”).

The results from this survey will be helpful as part of the decision making for setting the 2023/24 police precept, as well as the way we pursue the delivery of Neighbourhood Policing and Community Safety work. It will provide the Commissioner and his team with a broader understanding of the issues making people feel unsafe and how we work with the police and local organisations to better understand where and how resources should be targeted to keep communities safe and provide reassurance.

The Commissioner is committed to ensuring that we hear the views of as many people as possible. I would really value it if you would support this approach by promoting and circulating the survey to your ‘Citizens Panel’, and possibly via your social media channels/website, as a means of encouraging residents to participate before the survey closes on Tuesday 13^th December 2022.

On Saturday the Fairwater Neighbourhood Policing Team hosted a spooktacular Halloween crafts session for primary school children at Radyr Hub (10.30 – 12.30)

Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 8 September 2022, the Radyr & Morganstown Community Council has opened a Book of Condolence which will be available at the Old Church Rooms each morning this week (12 to 16 September) for people to pay their respects on the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

On Saturday, the Book will then move to Christ Church, Radyr so that it can remain open for those who wish to sign it over the weekend and into the new Bank Holiday next Monday.

The grounds of Christ Church will also be welcome as a place for the Community to gather for the national minute’s silence at 8pm this Sunday evening, 18^th September 2022.

For those who would prefer, the Royal website https://www.royal.uk/  also includes the facility to express condolences on-line. A selection of these messages will be passed onto members of the Royal Family and may be held in the Royal Archives for posterity.

Flags across the village have been lowered to Half Mast as a mark of respect and will remain lowered until next Monday evening when they will be raised again following the state funeral.

First Visit of King Charles III to Wales

King Charles and the Queen Consort are to pay their first official visit to Cardiff since his accession on Friday, September 16. Whilst at time of writing the full plans for this visit are unconfirmed, the royal party will be visiting Llandaff Cathedral for a service of remembrance before moving to Cardiff Bay to receive the Motion of Condolence in the Senedd and then travelling to Cardiff Castle for a formal reception.

This is likely to mean many roads are closed during the day on Friday and travel will be more difficult and plans, including the bus timetable, subject to change at short notice.

Some parking arrangements in Llandaff Village, around City Hall and in Cardiff Bay have already changed to allow for preparations for these events to take place.

14/09/2022 – Formal notice of road closures for Friday have now been published by Cardiff Council but due to the large numbers expected in Cardiff on Friday the main message is to use public transport where possible but those services are also expected to be busier than normal. For Radyr & Morganstown the road closures to ensure crowd safety around Llandaff may also mean that bus services are disrupted at times with little to no notice.

Bank Holiday on Monday 19 September

Monday 19 September will be a Bank Holiday as part of the national mourning on the day of Her Majesty The Queen’s Funeral.

Cardiff Bus have announced that “services will be following Sunday timetables on bank holiday Monday 19th September, and our Customer Service centre will be closed.”

Kat from Headway Cardiff and South East Wales would like to say a HUGE thank you to all of our friends at the Radyr & Morganstown Association, everyone who helped and volunteered at this year’s Radyr & Morganstown Festival and all who attended.

The running total fundraised currently stands at £7,240!!!!

Keep your eye out for details of more upcoming events as Headway continue to be the RMA’s charity of the year until the end of 2022. We still have a few events left to run including the annual turning on of the Christmas Lights across Radyr & Morganstown.

The first meeting to start the planning for the 2023 Festival will be held before the end of September and the committee are always happy to see new volunteers and new ideas for Festival events.
