CANCELLED – Christmas Lights across Radyr & Morganstown

Cartoon christmas tree and baubles

Unfortunately, due to the forecast for high winds and rain on Friday night, the annual Christmas Lights across Radyr and Morganstown has been cancelled.
The organisers are disappointed to have had to take this decision for the second year in a row on the grounds of event safety and are actively seeking options for an alternative provision for future years to ensure that the 2026 event can happen in some form whatever the weather.

We are hopeful that Santa will still be able to make a visit on his sleigh next Friday (12 December 2025).

Improved bus services for Radyr & Morganstown announced

Cardiff Bus

Following discussions with ward members, the Radyr & Morganstown Community Council and our County Councillors, officers of Cardiff Council have secured additional Bus Network Grant funding from the South East Wales Regional Bus Funding Group. In addition, Section 106 contributions from the Clos Parc Radyr development will be allocated to support improvements to bus services to Radyr, Morganstown and Pentyrch.

Key changes effective from 4 January 2026

  • Increased frequency: Services to Radyr will operate every 30 minutes for the net two years.
  • New Service: Route 64 will provide an hourly service to Radyr and Morganstown (via Ffordd Treforgan)
  • Extended Service: Route 63 will now run to Pentyrch Monday – Saturday, aligning with its Sunday route for consistent seven-day coverage.
  • Existing Service: Route 136 will continue hourly between Pentyrch and Cardiff via Whitchurch

The Section 106 funding is intended to boost passenger numbers so that, after two years when this funding support expires, services can be sustained through fair revenue.

Updated timetables

Route maps and outline timetables have been issued by Council Officers but not yet shared with the Web Team. Once these become more widely available we will link to them from here.

Unfortunately, due to the forecast for high winds and rain on Friday night, the annual Christmas Lights across Radyr and Morganstown has been cancelled.

Christmas Rubbish Collections

Dates for Rubbish collections around Christmas and New Year expect to remain unchanged from our usual Tuesday pattern but the Web Team have not yet seen confirmation of this.

We are aware that, whilst green garden waste collections will generally continue throughout the Winter, there will be a 2 week suspenension of these collections around Christmas to free up staff to deal with the larger than usual quantities of recyclable materials instead.

The Council have warned that there will not be a free Christmas Tree collection this winter. Households are asked to consider how they will responsibly dispose of any real Christmas Trees after the festive period.

The Council are also warning that no wrapping paper or Christmas Cards will be collected as recycling due to the poor fibre quality and high volumes of ink involved in these products. They must all be disposed of within your normal general waste (black bin) collections.

Helping Save a Life September with £6,000 cheque

Cheque presentation from RMA to SJAC volunteers

On Tuesday the RMA were pleased to be able to present their oversized cheque for £6,000 to representatives of the Radyr Division of St John Ambulance Cymru. This represents the total raised through the Radyr & Morganstown Festival 2025.However, the RMAs partnership with St John Ambulance Cymru continues through their remaining events until the end of the year.

St John Ambulance Cymru’s Save a Life September campaign is back, providing people with different ways to learn lifesaving first aid skills over the next month.

The Save a Life September campaign takes place each year, aiming to spread first aid knowledge with as many people as possible across social media and through free first aid demonstrations.

In Wales, the survival rate following an out of hospital cardiac arrest is less than 5%, compared to England at 10% and Scotland at 9%*.

St John Ambulance Cymru are aiming to change that by helping members of the public learn the simple skills that can help save a life if an emergency happens near them.

This year St John Ambulance Cymru are focusing on the key themes of CPR and defibrillator use, child and infant first aid, falls awareness and mental health first aid.

Each week the charity will be sharing key first aid advice with the public, as well as arranging free demonstrations in communities across Wales.

“Here at St John Ambulance Cymru we are passionate about creating more lifesavers in Wales and Save a Life September is just one of the many ways we’re doing that”

commented Darren Murray, Head of Community Operations at the charity.

“First aid can save lives and we want more people across the country to have the confidence to act quickly in an emergency.”

“Our St John Ambulance Cymru people can equip you with the skills required to support your friend, family or work colleague just in case the worst happens.”

Radyr Division of St John Ambulance Cymru are holding an open evening a the Old Church Rooms on Tuesday 16 September from 19:30. All are welcome for free training in CPR and a demonstration of how to use an AED.

You can find out more on how you can get involved in Save a Life September by visiting www.sjacymru.org.uk/save-a-life-september today.

Cartoon christmas tree and baubles

Unfortunately, due to winds and heavy rain forecast for the duration of the event, the organising committee have taken the difficult decision to cancel Friday’s planned Turning on the Christmas Lights across Radyr & Morganstown. Let’s hope next year the weather is kinder.

It has now been arranged for the trees to be on from this evening with a little less ceremony

Radyr Chain edition 274 is now out

3,500 physical copies have arrived and are now making their way through the amazing network of volunteer distributors and deliverers “Free to every home in Radyr and Morganstown”. These will be delivered over the next few days.

While you wait to get your hands on a physical copy from your usual source, the new Editorial Board have brought out a simultaneous Digital Edition with all the same content: https://radyr.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Chain-274.pdf (PDF, 8MB)

When talking about putting the Radyr Chain together Angharad, one of the members of the new Editorial Board, said:

We can’t make any Chain, but particularly not a bumper 44 page edition, without your contributions. Thank you to all of our contributors for the information and stories of local interest that you have provided. We hope you like what we’ve done with the Chain as we have taken over from the previous “Chain Gang” and work out our role in putting the paper together.

This is the first edition to be produced by the new Editorial Board who stepped at a public meeting in September after the previous volunteer team indicated their intention to step away from the paper having served for a significant number of years.

The new Editorial Board are ready to hear feedback on their first edition and to recieve submissions for Chain 275. Contributions are to be them by e-mail to chain@radyr.org.uk by 15 February 2025 for a mid March 2025 publication date. If you would like to talk about a possible contribution or develop an idea with them, one of the team would be very happy to have a conversation with any potential contributors.
