Save Morrisons and the Post Office in Station Road – a Call to Action

This report has been produced by the R&MCC following the meeting in the New Schoolrooms on Friday, 5th June.

Thank you to all those who attended the Public Meeting to Save our Post Office for Radyr and Morganstown. It was a brilliant turnout, thank you – were over 70 members of the community there!

We were joined by many of our political representatives: our Member of Parliament, Alex Barros-Curtis MP; three of our new Members of the Senedd, Huw Thomas MS, Anthony Slaughter MS and Joe Martin MS; and our two Cardiff Councillors Cllr Helen Lloyd-Jones and Cllr Calum Davies.

The event was organised by Radyr and Morganstown Community Council (RMCC) and chaired by the RMCC Vice Chair Cllr Allan Cook.

Progress made to date in the campaign:

  • Over 1000 signatures on petition.
  • There have been various correspondence from our political representatives and RMCC to try and influence the decision – to the Post Office, Morrisons and Morrisons owners, Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. For instance Alex Barros-Curtis MP shared key points from his engagement with the Post Office for options for provision and that they will be issuing a tender shortly – see below.
  • Some progress been made in exploring options for new Post Officer provision, including this being community led.
  • Discussion on how we can join up with other stores and Post Offices in a similar position both in Cardiff and wider.

The Community led discussion focused on:

  • Our focus should also be on the impact of the closure on the staff who work in Morrisons and the Post Office, some of whom were active in the meeting.
  • Preparing for the Post Office tender – Need to get data, stories and more information on different options.
  • Acknowledgement that as a community we will need to support the store and/ or Post Office in short and long term.
  • The RMCC will continue to coordinate the community led campaign.

What can you do?
