The Ty Nant Inn are delighted to announce that they have had a life saving Defibrillator fitted to the entrance to the pub. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high-energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high-energy shock is called defibrillation, and it is an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who is in cardiac arrest.

Defibrillation is received in less than 1 out of 10 cases. There are an estimated 100,000 defibrillators in the UK, but only 30% of defibrillators are known to ambulance services, which means that tens of thousands of defibrillators are not used in an emergency because emergency services do not know where they are.

We have the defibrillator fitted to the entrance to the pub where it is accessible to everyone in the community. We hosted a full training session with Calon Hearts for all staff members and locals who wished to attend. It was a great way to gather people together and understand how a Defibrillator works to help save lives. The defibrillator will analyse the heart’s rhythm. Stop CPR and make sure no one is touching the casualty. It will then give a series of visual and verbal prompts that should be followed. If the defibrillator tells you that a shock is needed, tell people to stand back. The defibrillator will tell you when to press the shock button.

We hosted several Charity Quiz nights and raffles with our local quizmaster Geoff Bodman who has been amazing in raising awareness and creating fun quizzes to raise much-needed funds for Calon Hearts and Welsh Hearts. We are extremely grateful to have him as part of our team in raising money for well-deserved charities.

We raised a fantastic amount in doing Quizzes and having collection points at the pub and each team member going beyond in collecting for this much needed defibrillator.

After having a chat with Local couple John & Karen and telling them about our goal, they without hesitation offered to donate half of funds to Calon Hearts.

John & Karen have had their own experience and we could see this was something that was extremely close to them.

‘’Ours is but a small part to play in bringing this device here in that all we have done is to bridge a funding gap and thereby speed up the process. The main thanks should go Luci & her team here at the Ty Nant and of course also to Calon Hearts. Luci did the hard work in setting up this fund raising campaign and thereby raising awareness for the need of defibrillators in the community. The patrons here at the Ty Nant gave generously largely down to Calon Hearts as the charity backing this campaign. Many people who suffer a full cardiac arrest are sadly not going to survive whilst waiting for an ambulance whereas an accessible defibrillator in the community can revive them and keep them alive until medical help arrives.

I was lucky that in 2015, a close neighbour who was a 1st year medical student administered CPR and was able to resuscitate me. The nearest defibrillator was a long way away.

Every community should have one and now that this community has, it is important to raise awareness of its existence as well as its location. Very well
done to Luci & Calon Hearts.’’

This new public access defibrillator at the Ty Nant Inn in Morganstown is in addition to the one installed on Station Road (outside Radyr Eyecare) in 2016 by the fundraising efforts of the RMA and a device stored inside the entrance to the Old Church Rooms (available whenever the building is occupied).

Each device can be accessed in an emergency by phoning 999 once at the storage box. The operator will then provide the code to access this emergency lifesaving equipment.

Here in Radyr and Morganstown, we’re fortunate to have a thriving Guiding movement offering girls between the ages of 5 and 18 the opportunity to make friends, have fun and learn exciting new skills.

Our Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger units are run by an amazing group of volunteers and we are looking for enthusiastic new leaders and helpers to join them.

We currently have more than 130 girls on waiting lists for our units. Could you help to give these girls the experience of Guiding that we know they’ll enjoy?

You’ll be joining a friendly, welcoming organisation in a role that comprises fun, and a huge sense of reward. And all that, in just a spare few hours per week!

No experience is necessary, and all training and resources are provided, together with mentoring and support along the way.

The following letter of thanks has been sent on behalf of Aryan’s family to be share with the community.

On behalf of Aryan’s family, we wish to thank you all for your kind words, condolences, flowers and the support you all gave and showed, which has gone above and beyond what we would have imagined.

To see the number of families who lined the roads braving the rain, vehicles coming to a standstill as the funeral procession drove past, during Aryan’s final journey from his home in Danescourt, and going past his former primary school, then passing his comprehensive school in Radyr was truly unbelievable, and very emotional and wish to thank you all for this.

The congregation gathering at Thornhill Crematorium, was yet again unbelievable, with families and friends of Aryan, who had come to pay their last respects. We would like to thank you all for making arrangements to travel there.  We wish to say a very big thank you to his friends who bravely took the decision to carry Aryan into the chapel at a short request. The tears of sorrow we saw from the start and during the service was completely overwhelming.

The speeches from Aryan’s primary school  headteacher Mrs Judith Davies and  from Mr Williams of Radyr Comprehensive captured the essence of Aryan so well, and we wish to thank you very much for this, and hope that your dedication will continue to inspire children to become who they want to be in the future, and to give any support your pupils need during this difficult time.

Special thanks to the South Wales Police that also attended Aryan’s service, and for the incredible work and dedication they put in to serve the public.  We also appreciate the ongoing support we are receiving from Detective Constables Natasha Monkley, Tom Slocombe and Bob Chambers.

We wish to thank Coles Funeral Directors for arranging the service within a short time, their professionalism, respecting and honouring how Aryan’s final journey would be conducted was impeccable, even accommodating certain things at the family’s request on the spur of the moment wasn’t any trouble for them, which we truly appreciated.

Finally, to all of Aryan’s friends, we thank you for being part of his short life, do not despair, do not blame anyone, his time here was short, cherish the memories you have of him, inspire yourself to become the person you want to be in life and make your family proud, as this is what Aryan would have wanted you to do.

Aryan’s parents Jitu and Hina, would have very much wanted to thank those who attended Aryans farewell service personally, but due to a medical episode, the service was cut short and this was not possible, but we as family thank you all personally for being with us in saying goodbye to Aryan.

We witnessed your emotions, we witnessed your tears, we witnessed your sorrow, we witnessed your love, we witnessed your support, we undisputedly witnessed that we were not alone, and wish to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

Thank you again for all your kind support.

Support continues to be available to anyone affected by this tragic incident from the Garth Ministry Area through Christ Church, Radyr.

South Wales Police along with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service reiterate their message to respect the water, stay safe and spot the dangers. Whatever your activity and your ability, the water can always catch you out. It’s easy to underestimate its power.

Sadly Aryan, a Year 8 pupil at Radyr Comprehensive, drowned in the River Taff this week while playing with his friends.

A representative of his family gave this statement:

“The family is devastated by the tragic loss of Aryan but we are touched by the way the community, including the Police and Emergency services have been trying to support us.

Aryan was our “Little Professor”, brilliant at Maths, an all rounder academically with a loving warm personality.

There will never be a day when we will not miss him. He will be in our hearts for ever.”

With help from many quarters, Windsor Gardens is now flying the Welsh and Indian flag at half-mast as a mark of respect and one of the trees has become a focus for tributes.

The family have taken comfort from the wave of love and sympathy shown them by the community and want to let you all know, it has helped them keep going through this harrowing period of time.

“Our church family are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of 13 year old Aryan and extend our sincere condolences to Aryan’s family and friends, as well as to staff and pupils at Radyr Comprehensive School and Danescourt Primary school. We will be remembering Aryan in our prayers at services over the weekend.

Both Christ Church, on Heol Isaf in Radyr, and St John’s Church, on Rachel Close in Danescourt, will be open for private prayer from approximately 09.00 until 16.00 on Friday 23^rd and Saturday 24^th June and anyone is welcome to use the church during that time for quiet reflection or prayer.”

Beacon Lighting Event

In the Grounds of Radyr Comprehensive School on Thursday 2 June 2022, 18.00 to 22.20

An event for all the family. Starting at 18.00 with Children’s entertainment and the judging of the Design a Crown competition (see below).

From 19.00 there will be live music from the Melingriffith Brass Band and the Porthcawl Ukulele Band – bring you picnic and enjoy the entertainment. The RMA Bar and BBQs will also be open throughout the evening. 21.45 we join sites across the UK in lighting the Jubilee Beacon before at 22.00 a fabulous Fireworks display. 22.20 Close

Whilst there will be limited parking on-site we ask that those who are able walk to the site to minimise traffic and allow those with access needs to use the available parking.

Design a Crown Competition

As part of the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations there will be a crown making competition. Design and make a crown out of recycled materials to be judged on Thursday 2 June at the Jubilee Beacon Lighting event.

Prizes for 1st and 2nd place will include a book token and the opportunity to plant a tree in Radyr & Morganstown as part of the Jubilee Canopy

First we have the temporary lights which have been on Llantrisant Road this week which we now have confirmation they will remain over the weekend and for Monday to allow the work by Western Power Distribution to be completed.

• Saturday; 0800 start, lights to remain out overnight (manned 0800 to 1900)
• Sunday: works recommence at 0900. Switch back of the lights at 18.00/19.00  (manned 0800 to 1900)
• Monday: temporary lights 0930 to 1500 for works to be completed.

Whilst this work was initially denied by Plasdwr to be anything to do with their development this has since been clarified as enabling works by Western Power rather than directly by a Plasdwr contractor and so the Plasdwr engagement teams were not able to alert residents to the works in advance.

ClosParc Radur junction with Llantrisant Road

The following notice has been published by the Plasdwr team this afternoon (Friday 13 May) relating to the works a little further out on Llantrisant Road.

Next week, there will be a change to the traffic management arrangements on Clos Parc Radur and Llantrisant Road.

Temporary, three-way lights will be installed on the Clos Parc Radur and Llantrisant Road junction to allow out contractors to safely carry out essential gas diversion works.

Although our contractors always endeavour to carry out works during off-peak times, these lights will need to be in operation during peak times on some days next week. This is to avoid any interruption to gas flow for residents while they’re switched over to the new supply, but we do recognise this will result in some inevitable traffic congestion. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

The lights will be in place throughout next week with anticipated operating hours as follows:

• Monday 16 May: 7am – 6pm
• Tuesday 17 May: 9:30am – 3pm
• Wednesday 18 May: 9:30am – 3pm
• Thursday 19 May: 7am – 6pm
• Friday 20 May: 7am – 6pm

We will return to the current, temporary junction arrangement after this.

Our contractors have also been working to install water utilities on Clos Parc Radur with two-way traffic management in place. These lights will be removed this evening and will be re-installed on Thursday 19th May for two days to finalise these works.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience these works are causing for local residents; as always, our contractors are working hard to complete them as quickly as possible.

Beacon Lighting and Family Fun Evening with fireworks

Among their exciting plans is participation in the UK Wide Beacon Lighting with an event in the grounds of Radyr Comprehensive School on the evening of Thursday 2 June 2022.

The evening will start around 18.30 with a crown making competition and entertainment specifically for the younger residents. Through the evening come and enjoy your picnic with support of the RMA BBQ and Bar open – or simply bring your own. Live music and entertainment all evening from local acts until the Beacon is lit at 21:45 and then the Fireworks display can begin!

The local council elections including the representatives to the Primary Council and our Community Council will be held on Thursday 5 May 2022.

In order to help voters decide who to vote for in the County Council elections, the RMA have organised a hybrid hustings event for Monday 25 April 2022 starting at 19.30. You can either attend on-site at the Old Church Rooms or online via Zoom (UPDATE: Video of event now available on the RMA YouTube Channel).

Our long-standing County Councillor, Cllr Rod McKerlich, is stepping down in this election. He will be replaced by 2 new representatives on the County Council for the Radyr & Morganstown Ward following the increase in councillors to reflect the increased population in our Ward.

There are also the 12 seats on the Community Council to be filled and these are all up for nomination & election this May (UPDATE: Due to a low number of nominations, the Community Council Seats have been filled uncontested).

A notice passed on from our Neighbourhood policing team:

The Welsh Air Ambulance will be canvassing Pentyrch, Radyr and Taffs Well (CF15 postcodes) area between the 28th February and 6th March 2022.

The canvassers are recruiting new members to join the weekly Wales Air Ambulance Lottery. They will not be collecting any cash or taking any donations. The new members they sign up agree to play/join via direct debit or cheque.

The canvassers will be dressed in some or all of the uniform listed, red jackets with Wales Air Ambulance logo displayed front left breast, red Wales Air Ambulance branded fleeces and red polo shirts with Wales Air Ambulance displayed front left breast and carry picture ID cards.

The canvassers usually operate Monday – Friday between the hours of 10am and 8pm and occasionally at weekends.

This will be legitimate canvassing and there will be no need to contact 101 regarding cold calling. If residents do not want to participate they can refuse and any residents with cold calling stickers can point to these and the canvassers should move on.

Cardiff Council are revising their Local Development Plan (LDP) and the proposals could very possibly lead to the loss of all the fields between Pant Tawel Lane and Rhydlafar.

Stage 2 of the Replacement LDP “Strategic Options” is out for consultation until 8 February 2022 and seeks residents’ views on options to increase the currently proposed numbers of jobs and houses in Cardiff. Any of the options could include adding the green spaces off Pant Tawel Lane to the ‘candidate site register’ for future development.

The recently formed Radyr and Morganstown Local Development Group, made up of concerned residents, have submitted a response to Cardiff Council challenging the justification for any increase in the current predicted housing requirements.

The Radyr and Morganstown Association (RMA) have dedicated their next meeting to discussion around the Revised Local Development Plan, what it means for the local community and how you can get involved..

Cardiff Council adopted the current LDP (which brought in Plasdwr) in 2016. They are now working on developing a revised LDP which will cover the period 2026-36. A number of potential development sites in and around Radyr & Morganstown are being considered in the new plan. The RMA is very concerned at what is being proposed and will be opposing the inclusion of these sites.

The meeting will be addressed by members of the RMA, the newly formed Radyr and Morganstown Local Development Group, the Radyr & Morganstown Community Council and the North West Cardiff Group.

RMA meetings are open to all. Come along to be briefed on what is happening and how everyone can get involved.

We hope the meeting will be held in the Old Church Rooms starting at 7:30pm on 21 February 2022, a Zoom link will also be available for those unable to attend in person.

Four thousand homes across Cardiff to take part in a pilot scheme to test ways in which recycling rates across the city might be improved – and 1,000 of these are in Radyr and Morganstown.

The scheme is part of a review of waste collections in Wales’ capital designed to hit Welsh Government recycling targets by 2025 and to make Cardiff one of the greenest and cleanest cities in the UK.

Since this announcement was made by Cardiff Council earlier in December, your Web Team have been seeking some answers to the burning questions about this pilot scheme.

The following is based on the answers we have been able to get to your questions through County Councillor Rod McKerlich and the Team at Cardiff Council responsible for the recycling pilots.

Why is a new scheme required?

Cardiff is currently the leading, major regional city in the UK for recycling. On average since 2018, 58% of waste produced in the city is recycled or composted. However, Welsh Government has tasked Cardiff with increasing this rate to 64% as quickly as possible and to 70% by 2025.

Although co-mingled recycling – placing all recyclable items into the green bags as we do now – is easy to do, the levels of contamination have proven to be too high despite various education programmes. Right now, when we look at the total amount of non-recyclable waste processed, 8% is made up of rejects from our recycling collection and process. The industry average is 2%. Analysis carried out in 2019/20 identified 10,000 tonnes of recycling were lost due to contamination. This alone could have increased our recycling rate by 3%.

What are the objectives of the new scheme?

The objectives of the pilot scheme are:

• To measure how much recycling is collected and determine the number of vehicles that would be required if the pilot was expanded citywide;
• To assess the levels of contamination received via the three-stream pilot, in comparison with the current co-mingled waste collection;
• To understand residents’ views on using reusable bags;
• To understand any impact on street cleanliness in pilot areas;
• To assess the size of the collection rounds and the time it will take to separate different materials against the current system; and
• To identify the resources required and costs involved to expand the pilot citywide.

How do I know if I am involved in the pilot?

All properties included in the pilot will receive a letter from the council in early December, followed by a detailed leaflet on what they need to do and the reusable sacks will then be delivered between 10 and 24 January 2022. These pilot will then begin from 24 January 2021 with waste continuing to be collected on the usual day (Tuesdays in R&M) but using the new collection methods.

Specifically in Radyr & Morganstown there will be around 1,000 properties which will be some, but not all, of the properties that were previously involved in the Blue bin pilot for the segregated recycling of glass items.

What should residents do if they have more recycling than the new containers can hold?

Additional reusable bags and caddies will be available on request. However, the reusable sacks do hold a large volume of materials, and the recycling will be split across 3 containers. As such, we will be encouraging residents to give the scheme a try before deciding whether they need an additional sack or caddy.

Customer feedback is important to us, we will be consulting those on the trial in March, once residents have been using the scheme for some time. In the meantime, the web page referenced in the letter to residents (www.cardiff.gov.uk/recyclingpilot) provides details regarding how residents can provide feedback.

With regards to cardboard, we ask that this is folded and placed in your sacks wherever possible (it is important to try to keep cardboard dry to enable it to be recycled). Exceptionally large pieces of cardboard should either be broken down or taken to a HWRC, but crews will be instructed to take cardboard from alongside bags as they do at present.

How can I give feedback on the pilot?

The Council will ask for feedback on the trial in March, but it is likely to continue beyond this date. If successful, it will take some time to roll out city-wide. It is not possible to give definitive dates at this time.

Customer feedback is important to us, as such we will be issuing new, improved blue caddies. We did consult residents regarding the glass trial, and found that the shape of the previous caddy allowed water to enter it. Also, some residents found that one caddy was insufficient for a fortnightly collection. As such, we will be issuing a new design caddy and collecting caddies weekly. Old caddies can be used for surplus glass, repurposed as desired or recycled in the plastics skip at your local HWRC . Additional caddies will also be available if you still have surplus glass.

For those involved in the pilot, there will be a public survey for you to share your views about how the pilot works for you. This will be open in March once you have been using the scheme for some time.
